Artist Statement
I am drawn to ceramics as clay allows me to express myself with my hands and fingers. Clay is such an organic substance and clay vessels have been a part of daily life since ancient times – amazing! I am drawn to tactile surfaces – in nature – veins in leaves and organic shapes of flowers and tree bark – in textiles – unique designs and textures in fabric, crochet and lace.
Most of my work is hand built and I love to do functional pieces – knowing that someone will handle and use and hopefully love the pieces I have made delights me. I use vintage textiles - crochet, embroidery and lace in my work, including pieces that my grandmother completed in the 1920’s and 30’s. Using those items in my work I feel I am sharing another artist’s history and sharing that history with others. In the same way, I often use botanicals as a design element and sometimes use the actual shape of a leaf in a piece.
I hope you enjoy using my work as much as I enjoyed making it.
